Prime Brokerage / Synthetic Prime Brokerage
Prime Brokerage has been traditionally dominated by the "bulge bracket" Investment banks offering a full range of services to Hedge Fund Clients including traditional structured products such as Equity Swaps (in various forms) and Contracts for Differences (CFD’s). Over the years Investment services have offered some form of abbreviated Prime Brokerage Services and this has evolved to the current trend of Synthetic Prime Brokerage.

A synthetic business is popular as it taps into a very lucrative product offering of the Prime Broker without having to invest vast amounts of money to enter what is already a mature and highly competitive and low margined business area. The ever-demanding market has resulted in a significant increase in Fixed Income and FX Prime Brokerage in what was traditionally an equity dominated business. The trend for Prime Brokers over the last three years and moving forward has been to create a fully integrated cross asset offering to their ever demanding Hedge Fund clients.

Prime Brokers have come into their own due to the increased interest in Hedge Funds, with a combination of European countries such as France, Germany and in more recent times scandianvian regions in particular opening their doors to Hedge Fund businesses along with the US Domestic Market maturing, more and more of the US Funds are looking to Europe.
